Henry Chester Althouse, 84, passed away Tuesday October 22nd, 2019, at home in Ocean Gate, New Jersey. Henry was born July 20th, 1935 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania to Chester Zetty Althouse and Georgine Moore Voss. Henry graduated from Toms River High School in 1953. After high school Henry was a freelance marine master mechanic and Shipwright. The Althouse family owned the Ocean Gate Seafood Market. Henry worked at Shelter Cove Marina as a marine mechanic in the 1960s. In the 1970s, Henry worked for the Ocean Gate Yacht Basin until he went into Commercial Fishing full time, following in the footsteps of his father. On his off time, Henry was a master wood worker. Henry also was very involved in his town. He was the president of Ocean Gate School Board through the 1970s. He was also an Ocean Gate Town Counselman. He served in the United States Army during peacetime and in the Army Reserves for a total of 6 years. He was a man of many trades. His interests included fishing, iceboating, gardening, and building everything and anything in his garage. Another one of Henry’s hobbies was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was constantly finding new ways to make them laugh. Henry’s sense of humor and quick-witted comebacks had them laughing until they were in tears. Everyone who knew Henry knew he was a force of nature. He was a very head strong man in all the best ways. He was a friend and neighbor to everyone he met. He will forever be a very big part of Ocean Gate’s legacy.
Henry was married to his beautiful wife Joan for just under 50 years. They met on a blind date to a mutual friend’s Halloween party. Henry always explained his marriage to Joan as a “50-year blind date.” Henry is predeceased by his loving wife Joan A. Althouse. He is survived by his brothers Thomas Althouse (April Althouse), Richard Althouse (Kathleen Morrow) and George Althouse (Cheryl Althouse); his children Steven Althouse, Lisa Hall (Russell Hall), and Susan Mascola (Albert Mascola); his grandchildren Rachel Hall (Kyle Wardell), Justice Mascola, Danielle Hall, Melanie Mascola, Nickolas Kijula and Gage Mrozowski; 5 great- grandchildren Lillian, Raelyn, Hayley, Lyric, and Seth. Along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Visiting hours will be Monday, Oct. 28th, from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm, at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville. Funeral Tuesday starting at 12 noon in the funeral home before a Prayer Service begins at 1pm. Burial will follow to Riverside Cemetery in Toms River.
